Modular Concepts is a solo exhibition of new works by artist Christa Stephens. In this exhibit, Stephens uses modularities of geometric forms to invite viewers on a colorful voyage through intersections of meaning, method, and materiality. Through this collection of abstract painting, collage, and mixed-media works, audiences can explore playful, thought-provoking juxtapositions that stimulate the senses and invigorate the imagination.
Central to the exhibition narrative is Stephens’ reflection on geometric shapes as the elementary particles of the visual world. To her, they are symbolic of the indeterminate matter that comprises all things, and she uses them to contemplate ideas about connection, relationship, and identity from a primal perspective. The works in this exhibit theorize alternative ways of seeing and being that lie beneath complacent assumptions and unexamined beliefs. They purposefully challenge preconceptions without offering any answers, prompting viewers to engage in an internal query of their own perceptions.
