Aurelia Gallery is excited to welcome back Blaine Ellis. A dedicated photographer and scholar, he spent 40 years studying and photographing sacred architecture in Portugal, Spain, Southern Italy, Istanbul, and Cappadocia. His focus lies in capturing the natural illumination of preindustrial sacred spaces. Through his black and white images, he reinterprets these spaces as visual theology, expressing self-definition through matter, form, and luminosity.
The Density Of Time Revisited and Technicians of the Sacred, are exhibitions featuring the lens-based art of Blaine Ellis. Using extended shutter speeds, Mr. Ellis captures the enigmatic emergence of anonymous beings from San Francisco Bay. The archival color pigment prints invite viewers to contemplate the fluidity of time and the multiplicity of forms. Each photograph is a result of chance, with gestures and improvisation unfolding mid-exposure. The swimmers depicted symbolize collective humanity, leaving space for individual interpretation.
