Mary Magdalene and her penitence have been a widely explored subject by Old Masters from Donatello to Tintoretto to Caravaggio. A repentant Mary Magdalene bowed over in sorrow as she leaves behind her dissolute life and trappings.
I’ve chosen to depict that dissolute life in the form of a 1950s-era housewife - this life was dreary, rife with unhappiness and high pressure to perform, to be spotless, attractive, and keep the kids away from Daddy and his Manhattan. Domesticity was a prison, forced expectation, a life sentence.
My Magdalene says, eff that.
