A wonderful story that is particularly important to me personally - Psyche is so beautiful that the goddess Venus is offended, and orders her son, Cupid, to place a pig next to Psyche and shoot her with an arrow so that she falls in love with it. A bit clumsy on the delivery, Cupid winds up scratching himself with his own arrow and consequently falls deeply in love with Psyche, and disobeys his mother by not firing an arrow at Psyche.
The tale leads to a happy ending - something that does not always happen in the world of Greek/Roman mythology. It is pure romance, truest love, and a fantastic exploration of the conflict between idealized love and physical reality.
I chose to focus my composition on the key moments of the story: the incomparable beauty of Psyche, the moment she is left on a rocky crag by her father after he receives a response from the oracle of Apollo, the flight of Cupid after Psyche disobeys his request never to see him in the light, and the moment of their eternal marriage. I wish to lead the viewer to these highs and lows of this journey from the trials and tribulations to the pinnacle of realized love. After all, at the end of the day, this is what we all seek in life - and miracles do indeed happen.
