Modular Concepts is a solo exhibition of new work by Santa Fe artist Christa Stephens. Offering a colorful combination of painting, collage, and mixed-media works, this exhibit explores modularities of elemental forms and the possibilities inherent in their variation and repetition. Included is an overview of works from three recent series that illustrate divergent interpretations of contemporary geometric abstraction.
Central to the exhibition narrative is Stephens’ reflection on geometric shapes as the elementary particles of the visual world. To her, they are symbolic of the indeterminate matter that comprises all things, and she uses them to focus on the mysteries that lie beneath the noise of everyday life. These works investigate complex interactions between color, pattern, and structure from a particulate perspective, distilling connection and identity to an unadulterated conceptual state where all things are equal.
