Created for an upcoming children’s-themed Christmas exhibit Dec-2022, I’ve chosen to combine a lifelong love for Picasso’s landmark work with the memories of playing Barbies with my 10yo daughter.
Like the theme of the original masterpiece, there is an inherent sense of exploitation, expectations of how the female body should look and act, and subliminal messaging that Barbie dolls exude that, frankly, is a complicated aesthetic to explore. I’ve always been drawn to Picasso’s focus in this piece on deep tones befitting urban interior light, archaic/totem poses, and choreography of scene.
