Animals hold a special place in my heart. I am uneasy about the concept of zoos and pens, it is difficult for me to see animals confined to specific areas. (This sentiment also strikes a current chord having experienced several forms of lockdown throughout the pandemic era). In New Mexico, horse culture is very prevalent. Upon visiting a ranch in El Dorado, I got to spend time with some horses. Most were interested in engaging with her, but the horse pictured here just turned away. In the bright New Mexico sunshine, rungs of the paddock cast horizontal shadows on the horse like jail stripes, creating the illusion that he is all too aware of his captivity. Countering this restraint is the tuft of golden tree branches in the background that form a brushy mane due to the angle of the shot.
