Philpot’s work can be both deep and expressive, yet haunting and quiet at times. His impressive commitment to precision, understanding of color, and unique textural communication have drawn collectors to his style for decades.

Born and raised in the Los Angeles area, artist Bret Philpot creates acrylic and mixed-media based paintings and sculptures that ride the fence between organic earthiness and organized structure.

His creative themes and influences are varied and have included precision based architectural renderings, abstraction, colorful mandalas, and even political subject matter.

Raised amidst the modern culture of urban California, Philpot later spent most of his adult life living in the high and low deserts of the Joshua Tree/Coachella Valley. Then, in 2022, he was drawn east and transplanted his life to Old Town Albuquerque, New Mexico. It was at this time that his journey to investigate his Cherokee roots was reignited, led in part by the deeply impactful influence of his late mother’s artwork. This passion and appreciation for indigenous weavings and patterns can be seen, particularly in his more recent series.

Philpot often expresses the wildness of the physical and atmospheric landscapes found throughout New Mexico and the Desert Southwest. His newest “Escarpment” series is an abstract expression of both his visual and emotional manifestation of the beauty that surrounds him. Constantly evolving, the multi-dimensional experience in New Mexico is like no other.
