Blaine Ellis became fascinated with the image of swimmers emerging from San Francisco Bay. Looking through my camera viewfinder he discovered an arena of ambiguous beings. Forms emerging through the ebb and flow of time. The use of extremely slow shutter speeds allowed the figures to multiply and fold back upon themselves. The spatial relationships and tensions between these beings became paramount. Chance became a participant. Gestures change in mid exposure. Improvisation. Space is left for mystery, space for the viewer to fill. The swimmers are no longer individuals, but everyman.
